Can you believe that next week is Thanksgiving?!
Thanksgiving is a day to gather with friends and family while enjoying each other’s company and a great meal.
It doesn’t have to be all about football and eating way too much!
Here are some tips to have a great time and enjoy your favorite holiday dishes without going overboard.
1. Focus on family, not food
Start your Thanksgiving day off right: gather your friends and family together and get out of the house!
Head out early and participate in a local Turkey Trot race. Or, just take a long walk through a local park or your neighborhood. This will set the tone for the rest of your day and will give you great memories that will last longer than the meal.

2. Eat a good breakfast
After that 5k, you will be hungry! Don’t use your early morning exercise as an excuse to eat a sugary breakfast. Stick to your tried and true breakfast favorites such as a green smoothie or an omelet loaded with veggies.
3. Don’t nibble in the kitchen
Thanksgiving meals take a long time to prepare and cooks are in the kitchen for hours on end. If you are on kitchen duty, or even just passing through to watch the parade, don’t nibble! It can be tempting to eat while chopping ingredients or to taste a dish multiple times. These bites can add up.
Instead, have some veggies and hummus out and ready for when you need a snack.
4. Put away leftovers
Once everyone has eaten, put the food away! Once the leftovers are in the fridge, you won’t be tempted to sneak bites of the apple cobbler as you pass by the table. Or, send it home with your guests. If you’re a guest at someone else’s table, offer to take the leftover salad but politely decline the pie and potatoes.
5. Don’t go overboard.. or as my mom puts it “don’t eat like you are trying to become the next Macy’s float”
Even if you cooked the meal, there may still be tempting dishes. Don’t deprive yourself of your favorite holiday classics. Instead, have one spoonful of mashed potatoes or one forkful of pumpkin pie. Starting your meal out with lots of vegetables will help you stay on track and will fill you up before dessert is served.
And remember, this is just a meal, not an excuse to lose focus of your goals and all of your hard work!
